On October 10th we’ll observe World Mental Health Day and this year we’re marking the occasion with the launch of a new guide aimed at helping line managers, as well as those in positions where they may help a colleague, support someone’s mental health.

The new guidance aims to bring together the wealth of mental wellbeing support that is available to Gateshead Health colleagues in one place, making it much easier for those supporting colleagues to find and understand how they can more effectively support someone who may be struggling.

Within the guide, you’ll find information on:

  • Training opportunities, aimed largely at helping you build your confidence when it comes to approaching either wellbeing-focused conversations, or tackling some of the issues that influence our wellbeing at work
  • Reasonable adjustments, how and when to utilise them; and information on tools such as wellbeing conversations, wellbeing action plans, passports and stress risk assessments – and how they can help in prompting them
  • Information about the various internal and peer support offers that can provide support to staff, such as our staff networks, mental health first aiders, mental health defusers, professional nurse advocacy service, chaplaincy service and other support groups
  • How and where to access free professional psychological support, including rapid-access (usually 1 working day) to talking therapies through our partners at the North East and North Cumbria Staff Wellbeing Hub
  • The actions and zero tolerance approach we’re taking to reduce experiences of unacceptable behaviour, information on how to report these when they occur, where to access training to help prevent these issues and how you can access support if you have experienced unacceptable behaviour;
  • And further support including more training opportunities available through Learning & Development, where to find wellbeing-focused support guides, where to access urgent support and how to access wellbeing and organistational change support through the Boost platform

Please take a moment to familiarise yourself with the new resource – and do share with anyone you think might benefit from being aware of our new guide.

We’d also love to hear how you think we can best share this information and support our colleagues – so please do get in touch if you have any ideas. As you’ll see, we also have version control in the document so if you feel any additions should be made, drop us a line and we’ll look at whether your suggestion fits.
