The Targeted Lung Health Check programme aims to detect lung cancer early. A national screening programme, this makes health check appointments available to those aged between 55 – 75 who are current or former smokers.
Anyone aged between 55 – 75 who has ever smoked should have received an invite from their GP to take part in a short health check. However, for many, their smoking history isn’t accurately recorded in GP records – meaning they won’t receive an invite. Elsewhere, many others have still to take up the offer.
Smoking is the number one leading cause of lung cancer, which causes more deaths in the UK than any other cancer. There are often no signs or symptoms of lung cancer at an early stage. Together, this makes screening vital in both diagnosis and treatment. You can find more on the importance of lung health checks over on the Northern Cancer Alliance website.
Health checks take a look at how well your lungs are working and can help identify cancer early. They are available to all who smoke, or who have smoked, between the age of 55 – 75. At the end of a check, you’ll either be told no further action is needed; be given a referral to your GP for breathing/lung health issues; or, if identified as at a higher risk of developing lung cancer, will be offered a CT scan of your lungs.
The good news is that regardless of whether you’ve not taken up an invite previously or haven’t received one at all, we can help you access a targeted lung health check!
To request a check, simply drop a line to [email protected]. Just include your name, age, smoking status (current or former) and where you live. Our team will then facilitate a health check directly, meaning there is no need to reach out to your GP or local authority.
